Have you ever wondered whether sunscreen is really necessary in Nigeria? Or heard someone say, “We have enough skin pigment to protect us from the sun”?
Others may ask, “Why use sunscreen when skin cancer is uncommon among Black people?”
These are valid questions, but there is more to sun protection than preventing skin cancer.
Although some types of skin cancer are less common among people with darker skin, having darker skin does not make you immune to the harmful effects of the sun. Sun exposure can still contribute to premature skin ageing, dark spots and other forms of skin damage.
Therefore, your skin is worth protecting!
So, what can you do to protect your skin?
☀️ 1. Make sunscreen part of your routine.
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it to exposed skin, including your face, neck, and hands. Reapply approximately every two hours when outdoors, and after swimming or heavy sweating.
👒 2. Wear protective clothing.
Long-sleeved clothing, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses can help protect you from the sun.
🌳 3. Seek shade when possible.
Try to limit direct sun exposure, especially when sunlight is strongest, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Remember that shade helps, but it does not block all UV rays.
☁️ 4. Do not be fooled by cloudy weather.
UV rays can still reach your skin on cloudy days. Sun protection is not only for bright, sunny afternoons.
💡 5. Remember: darker skin needs sun protection too.
Melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour, provides some natural protection against UV radiation. However, this protection is limited. People with darker skin can still experience sun damage.
Do you need expensive products to protect your skin?
Not necessarily! Seeking shade, wearing protective clothing and planning outdoor activities wisely are useful ways to reduce sun exposure. If you choose to use sunscreen, look for one that suits your skin and budget.
Healthy skin is not just about how it looks. It is also about how well you protect it.
Your skin deserves protection. Make sun safety a daily habit. ☀️
