Have you ever bought a skin cream because someone recommended it, an influencer praised it, or the seller promised you glowing skin in just seven days?
Before you buy that next cream, pause for a moment!
Not every product advertised as good for your skin is safe or suitable for you. Some products may contain harmful ingredients, while others may worsen the very skin problem you are trying to treat.
Here are five things to check before buying your next skincare product.
🔍 1. CHECK THE INGREDIENTS
Take a moment to read the product label.
Be cautious of products with unclear ingredient lists or products containing substances you cannot identify. Some skin-lightening creams may contain potent steroids that can harm your skin and general health when used inappropriately.
If you are unsure about an ingredient, ask a dermatologist.
📅 2. CHECK THE EXPIRY DATE
Always check the expiry date before buying a product.
Avoid products that have expired, have damaged packaging or show unusual changes in colour, smell or texture.
If a product has been opened for some time, check its instructions for how long it remains suitable for use after opening.
🚩 3. BE CAREFUL OF UNREALISTIC PROMISES
Does the seller promise flawless skin overnight, permanent whitening in a few days or a guaranteed cure for every skin problem?
Be cautious!
Healthy skin takes time and care. Products that promise extraordinary results without reliable evidence should raise questions.
Remember, an attractive advert is not proof that a product is safe or effective.
⚠️ 4. AVOID MIXING CREAMS WITHOUT PROFESSIONAL ADVICE
Mixing several creams together does not necessarily make them more effective.
Combining products containing different active ingredients may cause irritation, skin damage or unwanted side effects. You may also unknowingly combine ingredients that should not be used together.
Be particularly careful with mixtures containing bleaching agents, potent steroid creams or products of unknown composition.
If you have a skin problem, seek advice before mixing or applying multiple treatment creams.
🛒 5. BUY FROM TRUSTWORTHY SOURCES
Buy skincare products from reputable sellers and check the manufacturer’s details and product information.
Where applicable, verify the product’s registration status with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
Be cautious of products sold in unlabelled containers or products whose original packaging, manufacturer or ingredients cannot be verified.
A product being available for sale does not automatically mean it is safe for everyone.
💡 ONE MORE THING TO REMEMBER
The best skincare product is not necessarily the most expensive one.
Your skin type, the problem you want to address and the ingredients in the product matter more than the price or popularity.
If a cream causes persistent burning, swelling, severe irritation or a new rash, stop using it and seek appropriate medical advice. Seek urgent care if you develop difficulty breathing or swelling of the lips or tongue.
Before you apply it, check it. Before you mix it, understand it. Before you trust the claims, question them.
Your skin deserves safe, informed care.
